Mrs Lisa Humberstone

Consultant  Speech and Language Therapist in Adult Acquired Brain Injury

SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS

After obtaining my B.Sc. at Leeds University I have become a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in acquired adult brain injury. I am a Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, a Member of the Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Private Practice, a Member of Headway, the national charity for brain injury and a Member of both Expert and the Register of Expert Witnesses.  Member of the British Computing Society (BCS) and Medico Legal Special Interest Group.  Since qualifying as a Speech and Language Therapist in 1988, I have attended numerous brain injury related courses in the UK.

SUMMARY OF PAST EXPERIENCE

I have had 20 years experience as a Speech and Language Therapist, with 18 years in the rehabilitation of brain injury.  This has involved assessment, therapy, management, planning and training of carers and liaison with case managers.  I have had the opportunity of experiencing the NHS provision for acquired brain injury.  In 1990 I left the NHS to become a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in a privately funded brain injury rehabilitation unit working intensively with all levels of brain injury clients from the early stages of injury to vocational training level.   In February of 1997 I set up my own practice and now provide an independent outreach therapy service for brain injured clients who are currently living in the community.  I also provide consultancy for two brain injury rehabilitation units working with Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Neuropsychologists and training care workers to work with all levels of brain injury rehabilitation.

I am experienced in Augmented and Alternative Communication, AAC and Assistive Technology and can provide medical legal evidence as well as therapy and training in this area.  I work in collaboration with a Technology Consultant who is also able to offer expert evidence for Assistive Technology needs through our company Equip2Speak.  Together we provide independent guidance with equipment selection and specification, informed liaison with suppliers, full follow up technical support including commissioning of equipment and client/family training as necessary.

Since leaving the NHS I have gained in depth experience of client progress based funding and estimation of lifetime costs for therapy input and specialist equipment aids.  I have gained experience of the extent of the therapy required for long-term improvement in communication and consequently the quality of life of the client concerned.

Throughout my career a major part of my work has been to provide Medico-Legal reports for brain injured clients nation-wide in support of funding for ongoing therapy or as recommendations for a client’s claim.  I receive regular instruction from a number of the largest Law firms in the North of England as well as appointments from right across the UK.  As part of this work I have acquired experience of attending barristers meetings and providing evidence in court.
